Location and Collection: The Public Library cum Information Centre is strategically located on the campus of the United Rural Development Service, Heirok. It boasts a diverse collection of approximately 11,000 books across various subjects. Our collection includes:
- Reference and Textbooks: Covering core subjects such as Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Botany, Mathematics, Geography, History, Civics & Economics, and Political Science.
- Literature and Special Categories: Featuring literature in multiple languages, children’s books, medicinal texts, and agricultural literature.
Daily Resources:
- Newspapers: Access to five local newspapers.
- Other Media: Includes telegraphs, Employment News, and weekly journals.
Staffing:
- Personnel: The library is managed by one Librarian and one Assistant Librarian. Their salaries are covered by the organization, ensuring dedicated service to the readers.
Additional Facilities:
- Established: Since 2003, under the auspices of the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.
- Amenities: The library offers reading facilities, daily newspapers, weekly papers, journals, and free book borrowing. It also features a color television and comfortable furniture.
Community Engagement:
- Users: The library serves youths, students, and village elders from Heirok, Wangjing, Salungpham, Kairembikhok, Wabaching, Maryland, Heinoukhong, and Thamlai.
- Attendance: Approximately 500 individuals visit the library for reading each year.
- Membership: There are currently 520 registered members who borrow books.
Additional Services:
- Public Services: The centre also provides cost-free food, lodging, medicines, and recreational activities for residents. Regular medical check-ups are conducted for the elderly residents.
- Educational Support: Provides slates, chalks, pencils, exercise books, and primary books for adult literacy.
- Seasonal Programs: Organizes annual folk tale programs during the summer for the aged, preserving traditional storytelling practices.
